About Magnet Recognition
| DHMC was first awarded Magnet status on December 8, 2003 and in 2007 began the work toward gaining re-accreditation. Magnet Recognition® is an award that recognizes the attainment of excellence in nursing care and follows an intensive process of application and appraisal. History of the Magnet Recognition Program - In the late 1970s during a time of nursing shortage, research was conducted on hospitals that were able to attract and retain nurses to determine which variables helped these institutions maintain an adequate nursing work force. The attributes that were in common in these hospitals became the Essentials of Magnetism.
- The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) began designating Magnet institutions in the early 1990s.
- In February 2008, the ANCC reported that there are only 286 Magnet hospitals in the U.S. and abroad.
Magnet Recognition and DHMC - Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was the 95th hospital to receive Magnet designation in 2003.
- The process to obtain Magnet status was begun in 2001 by then-senior nurse executive Nancy Formella MS, RN, and a 16-member steering committee.
- Co-chairs of the steering committee were Marsha Day-Donahue, RN, and June Stacey, RN.
