Hundreds Turn out to "Be Positive" for CHaD Kids
October 01, 2009
A large crowd gathers at DHMC to honor the Marshall family and support the Be Positive for CHaD Kids initiative. Despite threatening skies and occasional drizzle, an estimated 400 to 500 people turned out to participate in a one-mile walk known as "Extreme Cam's Course" on the DHMC campus on Wednesday afternoon to honor members of the Marshall family of Lyme, NH. The Marshalls were selected on Monday to be featured on an upcoming edition of the popular ABC show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. To honor the Marshall family, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) physicians and staff and a large number of community members participated in a special one-mile walk accompanied by stars of the show, including Ty Pennington and Paige Hemmis. The Extreme Makeover crew was also on site to film a segment about the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) where Cam received his care. Cam's inspirational story of perseverance and positivity has touched many people at CHaD and DHMC. While undergoing treatment for leukemia, Cam found out that his blood type was B+. He decided to make that his mantra in both spirit and practice. Cam and the entire Marshall family soon turned their focus to others, and Cam decided to expand his personal motto to benefit all CHaD kids and families and thus, the Cam's Be Positive for CHaD Kids movement was launched. CHaD officials created the walking event as a way to embrace this extraordinary family and to honor the many families like the Marshalls who redefine courage and strength on a daily basis and who inspire the physicians and staff that provide their care, and the researchers who search diligently for cures in an effort to beat diseases like leukemia. The Extreme Cam's Course event also raised more than $25,000 to support research and patient care at CHaD. Links:
