Seeing a Specialist

Some health insurance policies require that you consult your primary care provider, or PCP, before you visit a specialist. Your PCP must authorize the visit. This is called a referral.

If you need to see a specialist for a health condition not treated by General Internal Medicine:

  1. Call the number on the back of your insurance card. Your insurance company will tell you if your PCP must authorize the visit to the specialist.

  2. If you need a referral, call General Internal Medicine at (603) 653-9500 (DHMC) or (603) 650-1070 (Dartmouth-Hitchcock • Lyme).

  3. Our office will notify you if your PCP needs to see you before he or she can authorize the referral.

Please note: A referral from your PCP does not guarantee that your health insurance company will pay for your visit to the specialist.
