| Pediatric imaging, as a component of the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), continues to be busy with a very broad spectrum of clinical cases, consultations, and teaching obligations. With the growth of CHaD, we expect continued growth in pediatric imaging in the coming years. Equipment Radiology's PACS system makes it easy for us to correlate different pediatric imaging studies and enhances both the consultative and clinical aspects of Pediatric Radiology. The introduction of the 64-slice CT scanner and the continued evolution of MR imaging have made children's imaging faster and allowed for the evolution of Cardiac MR and Cardiac CT, which are being done for pediatric patients with congenital malformations of the heart. This faster scanning will reduce the need for sedation in some children. We are strongly committed to minimizing the radiation dose in all children who require imaging. Pulsed fluoroscopy has been added to three of Radiology's fluoro rooms. This allows Pediatric Radiology the flexibility of providing the lowest possible radiation dose to children who undergo fluoroscopy studies. Pain-Free Program The CHaD PainFree Program, instituted by Anesthesiology, has made the pediatric sedation process safer and more accessible, allowing some procedures to be more comfortable for both children and their families. One such common procedure is the PainFree voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG), a study of the bladder and urethra performed most commonly in children who have had a urinary tract infection, unexplained dilatation of the urinary tract, or voiding problems. Teaching Pediatric Radiology continues its vigorous teaching service. A two-year Pediatric Radiology core curriculum for Radiology residents is taught at the noon resident conferences. Dr. Steven Sargent and Dr. Therese Vaccaro deliver lectures as part of the Radiology medical student lecture series. We also hold board review sessions for the senior Radiology residents. There are biweekly film sessions with the neonatal intensive care unit team and weekly sessions with the inpatient pediatric service team. Pediatric Radiology participates in the pediatric tumor board conference, and a pediatric radiology elective has become popular with the pediatric house staff.
Pediatric Radiology Team CHaD has added a second pediatric general surgeon, a second pediatric neurosurgeon, and a second pediatric urologist. ChaD recently hired DHMC's first pediatric otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist). This increase in staff will provide ever-increasing volumes of cases to Pediatric Radiology.
