Institutional awards

One of America's Best Hospitals

Graphic: America's Best HospitalsU.S.News & World Report has ranked Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) among the nation's top hospitals in its most recent "America's Best Hospitals" issue. U.S.News evaluated over 4,800 hospitals across the country for its 2009 edition. Only 174 – just over 3.5 percent – earned a Top 50 ranking in one or more of 16 different specialty areas.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock was recognized for its care in cancer, gynecology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat) and orthopaedics. The 2009 edition marks the eighth time on the list for DHMC's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, the only cancer care facility in northern New England to make the list. More about this award.

One of the top medical schools

US News & World Report LogoIn the 2008 U.S.News & World Report ranking of graduate schools, Dartmouth Medical School was again listed among the top 40 medical schools in the country. DMS continues to be among the premier schools in the two critical U.S.News measures: the depth and breadth of research activity and the percentage of graduates who go into primary care specialties. Other factors considered include grant funding, reputation, admissions selectivity, test scores, and student-faculty ratio.

One of a select group of Magnet hospitals

ANCC Magnet LogoIn December 2003, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center became the first facility in New Hampshire to achieve Magnet status for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet institutions demonstrate excellence in nursing services and patient care, a professional environment, and growth and development opportunities for nursing staff.

Top doctors in New Hampshire

Forty-two Dartmouth-Hitchcock physicians, in 30 different specialties, were named among the leading physicians in New Hampshire by New Hampshire Magazine in its annual Top Doctors issue for 2009. The rankings are based on 3,800 surveys distributed to every physician in New Hampshire, asking them to nominate specialists in 42 different categories that they would recommend to friends and family for treatment. One of the nation's top cardiac hospitals

Graphic: Top Cardiac Hospitals 2009DHMC is among a select group of 100 U.S. hospitals that are producing the best clinical outcomes for cardiovascular care, and which treat heart patients in less time and at a lower cost, according to a study by Thomson Healthcare. The study examined the performance of nearly 1,000 U.S. hospitals by analyzing their outcomes for eight specific measures. According to the study, if all cardiovascular hospitals achieved the same results as the 100 Top Hospitals award winners, more than 7,000 lives would be saved and nearly 750 medical complications would be avoided annually.

Medal of Honor recipient for organ donation

DHMC was among an elite group of hospitals recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for success in increasing organ donation rates at their facilities. DHMC received the Department's Medal of Honor for Organ Donation for achieving and sustaining a donation rate of 75 percent or more of eligible donors. The winning hospitals came from a pool of 716 hospitals that met eligibility criteria. DHMC was the only hospital in New Hampshire or Vermont to receive the award. Among the environmental leaders in health care

Graphic: Hospitals for a Healthy EnvironmentIn 2007, DHMC was granted the honor of inclusion in H2E's new Environmental Leadership Circle—a designation that recognizes health care's outstanding environmental leaders—for showing continuous and sustainable efforts in environmental performance, and a commitment to environmental health. H2E (Hospitals for a Healthy Environment) was jointly founded by the American Hospital Association, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association, and is creating a national movement for environmental sustainability in health care.

Image of NEEBC logoThe New England Employee Benefits Council (NEEBC) recognizes organizations for innovation and creativity in the planning and delivery of employee benefit programs. The Benefits Best Practice Award was given to Dartmouth-Hitchcock in 2006 in recognition of the effort to educate physicians and staff as the retirement programs of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic were being merged.

A top coding hospital

DHMC was recently named one of the top coding hospitals in the country by Ingenix, a nationally recognized leader in solutions for streamlining coding, regulatory, and reimbursement processes. Ingenix conducts this study to identify the top 200 hospitals in the nation with the most complete and compliant coding practices. The report ranks hospitals by the completeness and accuracy of their medical coding practices used to bill Medicare for inpatient medical services. A total of 2,921 hospitals were included in the analysis.
