Welcome from the Chair
Chairman of Orthopaedics, Dr. James N. Weinstein
The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Orthopaedic Residency Training Program continues to be an evolving educational experience that is unique in New England. Deliberately avoiding the trappings and rigid formalities of a "traditional" university academic training program, DHMC's Orthopaedic Residency functions in a particularly rich academic environment. Dartmouth College is one of the most highly regarded educational institutions in the country, and serves as an intellectual model for the residency program. The orthopaedic program focuses on the development of excellence in professional competence, emphasizes consistent patient advocacy, and nourishes intellectual curiosity and honesty, all within a comprehensive clinical and research ancillary support system. The program's atmosphere is informal and relaxed, based on close interpersonal relationships between faculty and residents. The program strives to develop a concerned and competent orthopaedic surgeon capable of confidently pursuing a satisfying practice in general orthopaedics, as well as developing the strong cognitive and clinical foundation required for pursuing subspecialty fellowship training.
The need to know more about the practice of orthopaedics has never been more urgent. Unchecked medical costs are driven by many new procedures that have not undergone rigorous scientific investigation as to their effectiveness. Physicians can barely keep pace with the latest medical research much less perform it themselves. Dartmouth Orthopaedics wants to attract and develop orthopaedic physicians capable of leading change and improving the systems where people and health care meet. Through combined program offerings with the Medical School, our residents have the truly unique opportunity to participate in advanced academic degree programs (MS, MPH), as well as state of the art, applied leadership and practicum experiences that focus on measuring outcomes and improving the technical, service and cost excellence of care for patients and populations.
