Research Pathway -only offered to DHMC PGY-1 & 2 residents...

DHMC is proud to sponsor a Research Pathway for residents interested in a career combining clinical practice and bi-directional translational research.  This pathway conforms with the ABIM's requirements, and combines a 2 year medicine residency, 3 year post doctoral research fellowship, and a 1-2 year subspecialty fellowship.  Only DHMC PGY-1 & 2 Internal Medicine residents with M.D./Ph.D. combined degrees or M.D.s with considerable research experience and achievement will be considered for this track.

The Section of Cardiology's areas of research emphasis include angiogenesis research, cardiology clinical research, cardiovascular imaging, cardiac epidemiology, outcomes and decision analysis, therapeutic catheterization and devices, echocardiography, and electrophysiology.  Multidisciplinary research centers include the Angiogenesis Research Center, the Cardiology Clinical Research Unit, and the Dartmouth Advanced Imaging Center. DHMC is a member of the New England Regional Cardiac Network.

The institution supports the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, one of 39 federally designated National Cancer Centers, and has ongoing research trials in the following areas: Brain, Breast, Bone Marrow Transplant, Gastrointestinal, Gynecologic, Head and Neck, Lung, Lymphoma/Leukemia, Melanoma, Multiple Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Pediatric, Prostate/Genitourinary, Radiation Oncology, Sarcoma, and Surgical Clinical Trials.

The Section of Gastroenterology includes centers of excellence in inflammatory bowel disease, esophageal and motility disorders, hepatopancreaticobiliary disease, and complex endoscopy.  Endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic surgical repair of reflux disease, and video capsule endoscopy are all used both therapeutically and for research purposes.

The Spine Center, led by Dr. James Weinstein, integrates Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, General Internal Medicine, and Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine into a cohesive unit to provide quality care and collect research data on the natural history and treatment of back orders.

The General Internal Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship provides advanced training in the discipline of General Internal Medicine.  The fellows receive training in the skills of clinical epidemiology, decision-making, critical evaluation of the medical literature and an introduction to clinical research skills.   The program is directed by Elliott Fisher, MD, MPH and H. Gilbert Welch, MD, MPH.

Dartmouth College adds additional resources to the research experiences available to our Internal Medicine residents.  Many DHMC faculty have dual appointments at DHMC and Dartmouth College and have agreed to serve as mentors for residents in this program.  A full array of research infrastructure is available, including programs in Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Genetics, Immunology and Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Physiology.  Support services including statistical and information technology are available both at DHMC and at Dartmouth.
