Application Procedures
The DHMC Medicine Residency Program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We do not accept paper applications.
The following documents are required from ERAS:
- The common application form
- USMLE scores (Part I is required for the application process and Part II (Medical Knowledge and Clinical Skills) is required well in advance of the start of the intern year -- please see below, New Hampshire Training License Eligibility)
- ECFMG report and certificate for international medical graduates (this includes U.S. applicants attending medical schools outside of the U.S.)
- An official transcript from the applicant's medical school
- Dean's letter
- The Department of Medicine letter (when available)
- Two letters of recommendation
- The personal statement
New Hampshire Training License Eligibility: It is a requirement of the New Hampshire Board of Medicine to have successfully passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 (both CK and CS), or NBME Parts 1 and 2, or have obtained ECFMG Certification before you can apply for a training license. Typically this requires that you pass these examinations or obtain ECFMG Certification no later than March 1st of the year in which you anticipate a June or July residency start date. It is imperative that you meet these requirements in order to begin your training on time.
Important Visa Information: Foreign national physicians must possess a work visa at the start of the training year, typically June 22nd, and except as noted below must seek ECFMG sponsorship as a J-1 exchange visitor. The objectives of the Exchange Visitor Program are to enhance international exchange and to promote mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other nations through the interchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
Medical students currently enrolled in a U.S. medical school on an F visa may be considered for training under an H1-b visa status. Further details regarding this issue can be obtained during your interview.
In order to be considered for a position in our program, applicants from medical schools located outside the US and Canada MUST have graduated from medical school in the last 3 years, passed USMLE Step I & II on the first attempt, be fluent in spoken and written english, be eligible for ECFMG certification, and have a minimum of 2-3 months of clinical experience in the US, Canada, or major European medical center at the level of a sub-intern. Observerships without direct clinical responsibility do not meet this criteria. Applicants who are not US Citizens or Green Card holders will also need to be eligible for a J visa; our program does not sponsor applicants from medical schools outside the US for H1-b visas.
We recommend that applicants not currently enrolled in medical school have uninterrupted clinical activity during the year prior to starting residency.
The deadline for receiving applications is December 15th of each calendar year.
A personal interview is a required part of the application process. An invitation to interview will be extended to candidates after review of the application materials. After receipt of all required documentation, each application is reviewed in depth by the program director and a decision to offer an interview is made within 2-3 weeks.
We participate in the National Residency Matching Program, and do not accept any applicants outside of the match. Resident stipends and benefits, samples of our standard contract, a general information sheet, resident eligibility requirement form, and GME housestaff manual are available for review on the GME website.
