Message from the Chair

Dear Internship Applicants:

The profession of medicine is one that challenges us to make a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.  As medical students, I am sure that you appreciate the importance of meeting this challenge as you seek to comfort, to heal, and to participate in the advancement of medical knowledge for the benefit of your patients and our society.  You are in an enviable position, for the occupation you are embarking upon is an exciting and noble one.

I commend you for the hard work and dedication that have now brought you to a most important point in your career.  As the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, I am delighted that you are considering our Internal Medicine Residency Training Programs.  In my role as Chair of the Department of Medicine, I strive to enhance the traditions of the Medical Center and the Dartmouth Community which places great emphasis on teaching and providing strong institutional support for postgraduate education.   My continued vision for the Department is that of a flagship unit that excels in education, patient care, and scholarly work, as I view the health and vitality of our residency program as being central to all our missions in the Department.

During my tenure at DHMC, I have been impressed with the collegial relationship that our physicians and nurses have with our housestaff, with the esprit-de-corps of the residents, and with the dedication and teaching skills of our chief residents.  This reflects, in part, the strong emphasis on our collaborative, team approach to health care and the kind of individuals that we attract.  I am convinced that as you take this important next step in your career, you will find that the Department of Medicine at Dartmouth offers a wonderful and caring atmosphere in which your intellect and medical skills will flourish.
