About the Harry and Carolyn Bird Lecture Series
This series focuses on the issues of personal health, delivery, and access to health care and their impact on the public, the medical profession, and public policy. A pre-eminent anesthesiologist, Harry served as Chairman of Anesthesiology of the then, Hitchcock Clinic, and nationally as a member of and as President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 1989. His contributions extended well beyond the confines of Anesthesiology however. His visionary leadership as President of the Hitchcock Clinic led to the extension of the Clinic’s services into many areas of New Hampshire and Vermont. Harry served the State of New Hampshire as Commissioner of Health and Human Services. In this role, he was responsible for delivery of health care throughout the state. Harry was named the Hanover Citizen of the Year in 1985, and served as moderator of the Town of Hanover. Harry has served as a member and chair of the Board of Trustees for the University System of New Hampshire.
Carolyn was a significant contributor to the day-to-day activities of the volunteer services of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital (having served as its President) and to the families of surgical patients. For many years, she was the coach of the woman’s tennis team at Hanover High School, winner of several state championship titles.
DHMC and Dartmouth Medical School believe it is fitting to honor Harry and Carolyn, in perpetuity, in a way that extends beyond anesthesiology. The Harry and Carolyn Bird Lecture Series is open to the entire community and will foster increased awareness of many of the pressing health care issues of today and tomorrow.
