DHMC Cardiologist, Medical Director, Honored For Outstanding Service

Dr. John Butterly of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, was presented with the Medical Staff Award for outstanding service to hospital and community by the New Hampshire Hospital Association (NHHA) at the organization's 72nd Annual Meeting.

Butterly is a cardiologist and is DHMC's Executive Medical Director. He joined the medical staff at DHMC as vice-chairman of the Department of Medicine in 1999. He serves on more than 16 hospital committees that are focused on enhancing various aspects of quality and the delivery of patient care, and is chairman of DHMC's Business Ethics Task Force. He is also the Lead Physician on the DHMC campus for Dartmouth-Hitchcock's CMS Physician Group Practice Demonstration Project. The goal of the project is to increase the practice of evidence-based medicine among Medicare patients with chronic conditions.

A committed advocate for medical malpractice reform, Butterly has been Dartmouth-Hitchcock's physician-spokesman on the issue. He worked closely with NHHA and the New Hampshire Medical Society to successfully advocate for passage of several important bills.

Butterly is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School and also teaches an undergraduate course at Dartmouth College. In 2005, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award in DHMC's Department of Medicine. He has published numerous articles in his areas of research, which include interventional cardiology and clinical outcomes.
