Richard D. Baughman, M.D., Fund in Dermatology

RBD

The Richard D. Baughman, M.D. Fund in Dermatology recognizes his 44-year career as a teacher, clinician, and clinical researcher.  The Fund is intended to support the sections' growth from regional excellence in education and patient care to national prominence in the care of those with dermatological diseases, research into causes, treatment and prevention of those diseases, and educating physicians, patients and their families about their skin conditions.

The art of medicine is learned during many years of practicing medicine.  Clinician leaders, like Dr. Baughman, become the embodiment of the art of medicine, which merges science and humanism by caring for the patient.  Having master clinicians work with younger physicians assures that the treasure of a lifetime of clinical experience is passed on to others.  Dr. "B" is the heart and soul of the dermatology program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.  From 1974 to 1982, he led the section by example.  His empathy for patients is the model that generations of dermatology residents and medical students emulate.  He taught us how to be caring physicians, and how to have rich lives.  He continues to be sought after as a mentor.

The Richard D. Baughman,M.D., Fund in Dermatology is a true endowment fund intended to provide general support for clinical education and research activities in the Section of Dermatology.  It is being established to further Dartmouth Medical School's commitment to maintaining an excellent faculty and an interdisciplinary learning environment second to none.

In the event that gifts to the fund reach a level sufficient to support a professorship (currently $2.5 million), this will become The Richard D. Baughman, M.D., Professorship in Dermatology.  Through the distinction it confers upon its successive holder, the professorship is intended to recognize and reward members of the faculty whose teaching is true to the highest standards of Dartmouth Medical School's educational mission and whose scholarship has contributed significantly to the advancement of interdisciplinary knowledge in dermatology.  As with other endowed chairs, new holders of The Richard D. Baughman, M.D., Professorship in Dermatology will be nominated by the Dean of Dartmouth Medical School and appointed in accordance with the College's established procedures for appointments to endowed professorships.
