Common Conditions
Your spine is made up of 24 small bones (vertebrae) that are stacked on top of each other to create the spinal column. Between each vertebra is a soft, gel-like cushion called a disc, which helps to absorb pressure and keeps the bones from rubbing against each other. The spine itself has three main segments:the cervical spine at the top (seven bones, including the neck), the thoracic spine in the middle (12 bones), and the lumbar spine at the bottom (five or six bones).
