Pediatric neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) is a multidisciplinary program staffed by board-certified neurosurgeons.
Dr. Ann-Christine Duhaime is the Director of Pediatric neurosurgery as well as the Director of Pediatric Neuroscience at Dartmouth. She joined ChaD arriving from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she was an attending neurosurgeon for thirteen years. She is experienced in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery and multidisciplinary care, including hydrocephalus, brain tumors, congenital malformations of the brain and spine, spasticity, and epilepsy surgery. Dr. Duhaime also performs laboratory research on brain injury in children and pediatric epilepsy.
Dr. Susan Durham is also an experienced pediatric neurosurgeon. Besides all aspects of general pediatric neurosurgery, she specializes in craniofacial reconstruction, complex spine problems, peripheral nerve disorders including brachial plexus injuries, and brain trauma research.
For more information about our multidisciplinary programs, see the links below. Children with neurosurgical problems are evaluated and cared for at CHaD, which has been recognized since 1992 as a "children's hospital within a hospital" by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. ChaD serves as the tertiary care center for large portions of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.
There is an accredited pediatric training program, a neurosurgery training program, and specialists in virtually every field of pediatrics. A multidisciplinary approach is employed to manage specialized pediatric populations including pediatric neuro-oncology, epilepsy, spina bifida, cranio-facial anomalies and pediatric trauma. A state of the art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was completed in February 1999. DHMC is a Level One Trauma Center. There is also a Level One Intensive Care Nursery with 30 beds. The staff and resources available at CHaD ensure pediatric patients are provided the highest level of care.
