The shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body. Since the shoulder is so movable, it is also very easy to injure because it is not as stable a joint as the knee or the elbow. The shoulder joint is made up of three bones: the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). These bones are held together by muscles, tendons and the clavicle ligaments. If these become weak, the shoulder can become unstable. Injury can also occur to the tissues and tendons when there is overuse or trauma to the area. Other problems arise from a degenerative process in which tissues breakdown and no longer function well.
