Overuse injuries: A Recap

During his 18+ years of practice, Dr. Hecht has found that most runners don't require surgery for overuse injuries. What you do need to do is to:

  • Modify your activities; in other words, change your exercise habits while recovering.
  • Start slowly when you do return to your normal activities.
  • Get better shoes or inserts if appropriate; keep in mind that there are three types of feet: a flat foot, a neutral foot, and a foot with a high arch. There are shoes that are made for each type of foot. Your shoe should fit with enough space in the toe box—both in length and height of the area around your toes.
